Otim Alpha & Leo PaLayeng stand at the forefront of a new wave of East African electronic music. Under the name Acholitronix, they combine traditional instruments from the Acholi culture of Northern Uganda — including the string instrument nanga, calabash percussion and flute — with pulsing synthesizers, deep basslines and club-driven production. The result is a dynamic, high-energy sound where past and future merge in an insistent rhythmic universe.
The duo have already made a strong mark on the global music scene with performances at leading festivals such as Unsound, Nyege Nyege, Roskilde Festival, Blue Dot in the UK and WOMEX. Their releases on the influential label Nyege Nyege Tapes have received widespread international attention and placed them at the forefront of contemporary African electronic music. But Acholitronix is more than just a genre. For Otim Alpha & Leo PaLayeng, it is a cultural movement that brings the musical traditions of the Acholi people into a new global context — without letting go of their roots. With their intense live performances and uncompromising sound, they are ready to take over the stage at ALICE this May.
