This piece is inspired by an invented mythology in Sheila Heti’s book Pure Colour, which divides
humans into three origins: born from fish egg, bear egg, or bird egg. Each inhabits the world
differently, pulled towards different ways of seeing, behaving, and understanding. Held in balance
with each other, the three eggs are incomplete, interdependent, and wholly unmovable — no single
perspective can shift without disturbing the others.
The piece takes this mythology as a blueprint for thinking about human interaction and the
difficulty of change. How might fundamentally different ways of moving, breathing, reacting
temporarily exchange places? What fascinating misunderstandings could take place in the
exchange? Imagining such as state of equilibrium makes its instability more visible. Stasis becomes
a way of examining movement: a means of considering what might have to shift, collapse, or be
redistributed before a different balance can emerge.
