Friends with benefits! Performing arts venue SORT/HVID and ALICE join forces across live music, performing arts and literature
What happens when a theatre set suddenly becomes a concert space? When musicians step into an existing universe and begin to play with it, disrupt it and reinterpret it?
This autumn, two of Denmark’s most forward-thinking arts institutions join forces as ALICE curates a concert series within the set of SORT/HVID’s theatre production BAD MEXICAN DOG. Three prominent international music acts are invited to explore the visual world of the production and, in their own ways, enter into dialogue with the story’s political and magical themes.
BAD MEXICAN DOG
BAD MEXICAN DOG is Jonas Eika’s resort fable from the sci-fi short story collection Efter Solen, which received the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 2019. The story is a queer-poetic class narrative about a group of beach boys living at a resort in Mexico.
At SORT/HVID, the play is directed by Emil Rostrup, with set design by GRIF (Ditte Tygesen and Mikkel Rostrup), known for their off-kilter and brutal stage aesthetics. When music and set design meet in the aftermath of the play, the magical and ritualistic unfold, shifting our perception of reality. The set opens up new fantasies of another world – and, not least, another world order. It is seductive and frightening at the same time.
On the new collaboration, SORT/HVID and ALICE say:

The concerts
ALICE moves the concert experience into the set of BAD MEXICAN DOG for three Fridays in November. Here, three international music acts are invited to interpret and expand the universe through their own musical and performative expressions. The set thus becomes more than a backdrop for the concerts: it becomes an active part of the experience, where music, body, ritual and space merge.
13 November – Fuensanta (MX)
Poetry, surrealism and Latin American neo-folk on vocals and double bass
Like a clear crystal, Fuensanta’s music opens up a surreal view of the world. The Mexican singer and double bassist moves freely between the intimate, the experimental and the bodily, with a poetic and dreamlike approach to Latin American neo-folk.

20 November – REZMORAH (BR)
Ritual electronic visions, eco-queer myths and metamorphic performance
Between ritual, club culture and speculative eco-queer mythology, Brazilian artist REZMORAH creates a boundless universe of electronic sound and transformation. A practice that challenges the boundaries between live concert, performance and ceremony.

27 November – Blanco Teta (AR)
Transfeminist noiserock from Buenos Aires
The punk quartet Blanco Teta combines abrasive noiserock, performance and activism in an explosive and uncompromising expression that challenges norms around body, gender and musical form, with a distorted cello at the forefront.
