Few musicians have travelled as far and wide as Swedish-American artist Baba Stiltz. Over the past decade, he has explored American primitive guitar music, produced for Yung Lean, released experimental house tracks on Studio Barnhus and XL Recordings – a trajectory that led to a glamorous jet-set life as a DJ – and won the prestigious Guldbagge Award for his work in film music. With his latest project, he has stripped away the glitz and glamour, slowed things down and turned his gaze inward, crafting melancholic, stripped-back guitar songs in an attempt to return to the essence of music and reconnect with his roots in Stockholm and Vacaville, California.
Armed with a notebook, a guitar, a four-track tape recorder and a million miles in the rearview mirror, Baba Stiltz has created a raw, slow-burning indie rock sound on his new, critically acclaimed album Totally (2026). Its influences range from the free improvisations of Eugene Chadbourne to the unmistakable repetitions of Spacemen 3 and the lyrical immediacy of country music. Stiltz’ laconic, Lou Reed-esque baritone explores themes of loss, grief, long drives along I-5 and the consequences of our increasingly digital lives. Last year, Baba Stiltz joined forces with Norwegian-American musician Okay Kaya on the pop-folk album Blurb (2025), and he has also recently crossed musical paths with ALICE-favourite Ana Roxanne. When Baba Stiltz takes the stage at ALICE, he will perform in a stripped-back solo setup with guitar. We are honoured to welcome him this January.
