With an explosive blend of brass and Caribbean rhythms, Papayebrass flip the script of their musical heritage. With trumpets, trombones, saxophone, tuba, and drums in hand, the eight-piece band creates a sound bursting with both energy and tradition. Even their name reflects this mix: it nods at papayeras as well as brass; at Colombian folk music as well as North American Big Bands.
For centuries, rhythms from Africa, Europe, the US, and the wider Caribbean have traveled to Colombia’s coast, shaping the region’s music. Papayebrass, hailing from the town of Santo Tomás in Caribbean Colombia, carry this forward. Their sound fuses porro, merecumbé, Afro-Colombian drumming, African rhythms, sound system and verbena music, house, rap, charleston… and, as the band themselves put it, “whatever else we feel like throwing in.” The result is a massive outburst of energy – don’t miss the giant brass-fusion party when Papayebrass comes to ALICE this November!
