With members from New York, Haiti, Sweden and Denmark, the young innovative jazz collective ØKSE challenges the outer edges of jazz. The group’s self-titled debut album is a visionary meeting between avant-garde jazz and alternative hip hop, featuring contributions from some of the most distinctive voices in the American underground, including billy woods and ELUCID of Armand Hammer as well as Maassai and Cavalier. The result is an album that constantly shifts between unruly energy, abstract textures and off-kilter rhythmic movements — always driven by a strong collective pulse.
Each member of ØKSE is already established as a distinctive solo artist on the international experimental scene, but together they open up new musical spaces and explore the possibilities of sound with both curiosity and weight. The group’s name points both to one of humanity’s oldest tools and to the spiritual concept of “ashe”: a life force and energy flowing through all living things, channelled through music, movement and community. That energy runs through ØKSE’s music, which feels ancient, futuristic and intensely alive all at once. Experience it deep in your bones when they take the stage this July. The concert is presented in collaboration with Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
