Maniucha & Ksawery PL

Moving encounter between jazzy improvisation and Ukrainian folk heritage
ADVISORY

She sings about harvest, love, and the seasons. He improvises on his double bass. The duo Maniucha & Ksawery unite the treasures of Ukrainian folk song with the deep tones of a jazz-inspired double bass. The result is intimate and deeply moving; a doorway into something that might otherwise have been forgotten.

Maniucha & Ksawery consists of vocalist Maniucha Bikont and Ksawery Wójciński. Maniucha Bikont is based in Warsaw and an established figure on the Polish music scene. She is known for her dedication to the region’s traditional music, having spent years traveling from village to village in the Ukrainian wetlands of Polissya. There, she met the elders of the villages and learned their orally transmitted songs. She now performs these together with Polish double bass virtuoso Ksawery Wójciński, who uses minimalist improvisation to bring this Ukrainian song heritage into a new and deeply emotional space.

In this world, you encounter everything from songs about harvest, love, and the seasons to lullabies, wedding songs, and Christmas carols. For their debut album, ‘Oj borom borom’, they received an award from Polskie Radio, and previously Maniucha & Ksawery have performed in Poland, the USA, Ukraine, Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland, France, and Slovenia. Now they’re finally coming to Denmark! We look forward to welcoming them and experiencing their intimate and incredibly beautiful fusion of jazzy improvisation and oral musical traditions.

The concert is presented with support from The Polish Institute in Stockholm.
