The sound of New York jazz is unmistakable: shaped by the city’s intense musical environment, it is edgy, open, and searching—driven by curiosity and quick shifts in direction. For more than a decade, Jeong Lim Yang has explored this sonic landscape as both a bandleader and bassist. With her distinctive approach, she places the double bass at the center, allowing it to function as both rhythmic foundation and melodic engine. In Yang’s hands, the distinctive New York sound takes on a deeply personal character, where harmonic experimentation and improvisation merge into a vibrant and dynamic musical expression.
Jeong Lim Yang won NPR’s award for “Best Debut Album of the Year” and later received wide acclaim for her bold interpretation of Mary Lou Williams’ masterpiece Zodiac Suite: Reassured (Fresh Sound New Talent, 2022). Here, the classic suite was reimagined in a piano trio format, with the double bass placed prominently in the foreground. When Yang takes the stage at ALICE this May, she does so with a quartet of outstanding musicians. They are currently touring the album Synchronicity (Sunnyside, 2025), which—drawing inspiration from Carl Jung’s theory of synchronicity—elegantly balances traditional jazz idioms with boundary-pushing improvisation. Don’t miss an intense and captivating concert experience when Jeong Lim Yang performs at ALICE this May.
