Etuk Ubong & The Etuk Philosophy NG + Ruth Belai (DJ) DK

A whirlwind of brass-led afro jazz
ADVISORY

The Nigerian trumpeter Etuk Ubong is synonymous with horn-driven Afro-jazz and socially engaged lyrics. Afrobeat, highlife, and jazz are dynamically fused with the energetic rhythms of the ritual music of Ekombi. Arrive early, and get your body moving to an afrocentric DJ-set by Ruth Belai.

Etuk Ubong

Etuk Ubong’s music is so vibrant and dynamic that it has been compared to the British jazz group Sons of Kemet. At the same time, it carries an unmistakable local Nigerian character thanks to the ekombi rhythms, which pulse through the explosive soundscapes. Ekombi originates with the Efik people of Nigeria’s Cross River region, where Etuk Ubong himself was born. None other than Seun Kuti has praised him as “one of the best things ever to come out of Lagos.” Ubong himself calls his sound “earth music” – organic and forward-charging, characterized by quick tempos, powerful horns, and strongly socio-political lyrics. Alice hosted Etuk Ubong in 2023 – and we cannot wait to welcome the Nigerian trumpeter and his band back again to our stage!

Etuk Ubong follows in the footsteps of a long line of afrobeat- and hard bop-influenced trumpeters in the vein of Tunde Williams, who was part of Fela Kuti’s groundbreaking band Africa 70. Ubong debuted under his own name in 2017 with the release of Tales of Life. Before that, he honed his craft in The Positive Force, the afrobeat ensemble led by Fela Kuti’s eldest son, Femi. His latest album, Africa Today, stands out for its socially conscious lyrics and a band of no fewer than 11 members. The result is magical, energetic, and irresistibly danceable!
