Raster Presents: Byetone DE + Frank Bretschneider DE + Xuri & John Cleworth + Alexander Tillegreen

Iconic electronic label presents two German legends and two emerging artists from the Danish scene

The iconic German label Raster (formerly Raster-Noton) has been a defining force in the international minimalist electronic music scene since the 1990s. Expect an evening of crackling glitch, clicks-and-cuts, strong rhythmic structures, and stunning visuals as Raster showcases its two co-founders and legends, Byetone (Olaf Bender) and Frank Bretschneider, along with two locally based, emerging artists from the label’s roster: Xuri & John Cleworth and Alexander Tillegreen.

The iconic German label Raster—formerly known as Raster-Noton—was founded in Chemnitz in 1996 and has had a major influence on the international electronic scene, shaping minimalist electronic music for nearly three decades. Raster’s sound is characterized by glitches, clicks-and-cuts, strong rhythmic structures, and a digital aesthetic, with live shows featuring striking abstract visuals. This evening at ALICE, Raster presents an impressive lineup of two label legends and co-founders, Byetone (Olaf Bender) and Frank Bretschneider, alongside two fresh, locally based talents from the label’s roster: Xuri feat. John Cleworth and Alexander Tillegreen.

Byetone
German sound artist and Raster co-founder Olaf Bender, also known as Byetone, brings his deeply rooted minimalist electronic sound to the audience at ALICE. Born in former East Germany, Bender found his artistic path through a chance discovery of 16mm film equipment, leading him into the experimental realm of visual and auditory media. His work is marked by a unique approach to minimalism, crafting energetic rhythmic landscapes with a raw, almost rebellious edge. Known for his intense live sets, Bender merges minimalist rhythms with a rock-inspired attitude.

Frank Bretschneider
Electronic pioneer and Raster co-founder Frank Bretschneider is renowned for his ability to create sonic worlds where precise, minimalist soundscapes and complex rhythmic structures unfold. His sound world combines sharp electronic textures with integrated visual elements that amplify the chaotic atmosphere of his music. Like Olaf Bender, Bretschneider grew up in former East Germany, where his auditory aesthetic was influenced by smuggled Western cassette tapes and inspiration from science fiction films. He began his journey with tape recorders and homemade instruments in the 1980s and has since achieved cult status on the electronic scene. Bretschneider’s latest album, LUNIK (2024), is currently making waves.

Xuri & John Cleworth
Electronic musicians Xuri (Susanne Cleworth, DK) and John Cleworth (AU) present their new AV piece, blending pounding rhythms with striking visuals. Xuri, with a background in graphic design, paints vivid soundscapes that fuse experimental ambient, organic textures, and contemporary classical elements. John, a classically trained Tonmeister and composer, merges acoustic and electronic sound design, merging classical elements with modern synthesis. Together, they deliver a powerful, playful, and organic AV performance.

Alexander Tillegreen
The resident artist and composer Alexander Tillegreen brings a unique approach, exploring sound at the intersection of music, psychology, and perception. Tillegreen has collaborated extensively with researchers in neuroaesthetics, psychological music studies, and voice analysis, including work at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics. His artistic practice investigates how sonic experiences impact our consciousness and senses, activating psychoacoustic effects through his music that invite listeners into hypnotic and boundary-pushing auditory experiences. This evening, he will envelop ALICE in his sensory-stimulating works, spanning deep bass lines, granular synth sequences, playful polyrhythmic patterns, and voice fragments.

The concert is part of Vinterjazz 2025 – a nationwide festival taking place from January 30th to February 28th. More info via www.jazz.dk.
