Rashad Becker DE/SY + Anton Friisgaard DK

Dark sound archaeology and psychoacoustic rituals from an electronic legend

For sound nerds, Rashad Becker is known for his long-standing work as a true mastering genius, with more than 1200 releases under his belt. But in his own compositions, the Berlin-based composer, sound artist and producer explores the structural and psychoacoustic properties of sound with surgical precision and an almost uncanny imagination. Come and be absorbed by his compelling universe when he performs at ALICE in March. Anton Friisgaard opens the evening.

For sound enthusiasts around the world, Rashad Becker is a legend. Since 1997, the Berlin-based composer, sound artist and producer has been a central figure at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin — the studio behind Basic Channel — and has left his mark on more than 1,200 releases as a mastering and mixing engineer. Here, he has helped shape the sound of uncompromising, experimental electronic music, often behind the scenes, but with enormous influence. His own artistic output is less widely known, yet radically uncompromising and deeply original. Becker is especially renowned for the critically acclaimed series Traditional Music of Notional Species on PAN — a distinctive universe of complex, otherworldly compositions in which sounds behave like living organisms that breathe, contort and mutate in constant motion.

And it is precisely this universe that audiences can look forward to entering when Rashad Becker performs at ALICE. Live, he opens a dark and inward-looking listening space where the boundaries between music, sound art and spiritual experience dissolve. The audience is invited into an apocalyptic, meditative and almost ritualistic sonic landscape, where richness of detail and intensity demand complete surrender. For fans of Drew McDowall, Alessandro Cortini and Jan Jelinek — and for anyone with an appetite for challenging and transformative listening experiences — this is a rare opportunity to experience a true master in his natural element.

Anton Friisgaard
Anton Friisgaard is a multifaceted musician and soundmaker with roots in electronic music production and composition, yet with a practice that extends far beyond genres and formats. His artistic curiosity — and his deep-felt love for the multiplicity of musical expression — has led to collaborations with classical ensembles, live performances with Danish electronic pioneer Gunner Møller Pedersen, and in-depth explorations of tapeloops and analogue processes. Most recently, he has worked closely with local Balinese gamelan musicians on the Stroom release Teratai Åkande.

Anton Friisgaard has released music on labels such as Flau, Janushoved, Vaagner and Stroom, and has presented his work at festivals and stages including Roskilde Festival, Strøm, Intonal, VinterJazz and CPH Jazz — as well as at venues and art institutions such as ALICE, Koncertkirken, Gl. Strand and Mayhem. With his sensuous and immersive sonic expression, Anton Friisgaard opens the evening for Rashad Becker.
