Trance-inducing Javanese string music, and ritual dance converge with four prominent names from the Danish jazz-improv scene

Trance-inducing Javanese string music, ritual dance, and shamanism converge with four prominent names from the Danish jazz-improv scene when Javanese Tarawangsa joins forces with Lotte Anker, Kresten Osgood, Aske Krammer, and Snöleoparden during the summer’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival at ALICE. Over three hours, six musicians, a shaman, and two dancers take over the terrace outside Stairway for a consciousness-expanding jam session. The concert is free.

Immerse yourself in ritual music, deep traditions, and consciousness-expanding improvisation as Javanese Tarawangsa collaborates uniquely with Lotte Anker, Kresten Osgood, Aske Krammer, and Snöleoparden for the opening concert of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival at ALICE! Over three hours, six musicians, a shaman, and two dancers take over the terrace outside Stairway for a trance-inducing experience beyond the ordinary.

Javanese Tarawangsa is part of the trance collective Tarawangsa Sunda Lugina from Rancakalong in western Java. As descendants of the rich tradition of ritual trance music and dance, they proudly preserve the cultural heritage of their village and honor the Javanese fertility goddess Nyimas Pohaci. This afternoon, the ensemble consists of the two instrumentalists Pak Pupung Supena and Pak Tahya, as well as two dancers and a shaman guiding the ritual. The music, characterized by the traditional string instruments Rebab Tarawangsa and Kacapi Tarawangsa, has been passed down through many generations.

One can look forward to a truly unique and trance-inducing musical experience as Javanese Tarawangsa meets the prominent Danish jazz musicians Lotte Anker, Kresten Osgood, Aske Krammer, and Snöleoparden this afternoon. The concert is free.

The concert is part of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2024, taking place from June 5 to July 14 at 120 venues throughout the capital. See the program at www.jazz.dk
