ALICE proudly presents a solo-performance from guitar icon Dimitris Mystakidis – a leading force of moderne Greek rembetiko music.

In a solo performance that breeds memories and emotions, Dimitris Mystakidis delivers his own unique interpretation of rembetiko songs that were written in America by Greek immigrants in the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century.  Reviving the forgotten “tsibiti” guitar style, the rembetiko guitar virtuoso Dimitris Mystakidis, narrates with his music the pain of separation, the hardships of the journey, the immense struggle for survival and the never-ending hope of homecoming, while migration tales of the past are being reflected to the present.

Dimitris’ guitar style, follows the story: At the dawn of 20th century, Greek immigrant musicians, being influenced by the fingerpicking technique of the African-American bluesmen, adopted the open tunings of the blues and created the original guitar style tsibiti. Until now, the tsibiti technique could only be tracked in the American recordings of the past. Dimitris dug it up and integrated it with his personal touch in his “Amerika” album and performances.

Press quotes:

“If ever you wanted a record to justify that ‘Greek blues’ tag, Mystakidis’ CD is the one. Just his solo acoustic guitar and voice, plus a few touches of guest vocal, it’s a thing of understated power and wonder. ….. It’s a bit of a treasure and deserves to become a reference point for open-minded acoustic guitar fans worldwide.” – Ian Anderson fROOTS
