Experience one of the world’s most acclaimed female choirs within the Bulgarian vocal tradition, when ALICE has the honor of presenting Bulgarian Voices Angelite in the most magnificent setting imaginable: beneath the monumental arches of Grundtvig’s Church.
Once you’ve experienced Bulgaria’s rich tradition of women’s choirs, their enchanting sound is hard to forget. This is music that feels as though it comes from another world, yet is grounded in the rich soil of folk heritage. The unique sound of Bulgarian choirs has inspired countless musicians, and in the 1980s, the vocal tradition sparked a devoted cult following, influencing the likes of Dead Can Dance and Kate Bush. This growing fascination shone a spotlight on the foremost Bulgarian choirs, who had spent decades refining these ancient techniques. Today, several choirs keep the genre alive, but if you want to experience the source, there are two ensembles that stand at the absolute pinnacle. One of them is Bulgarian Voices Angelite, which ALICE is once again honored to present — this time in truly spectacular surroundings at Grundtvig’s Church in Nordvest.
During the communist era, the choir’s opportunities to travel abroad with its extraordinary music was severely limited. But since then, Bulgarian Voices Angelite have built a reputation as an ensemble that elevates the Bulgarian choral tradition to sublime heights. They have released several critically acclaimed albums, performed grand concerts around the world (including two sold-out ALICE-shows at Marmorkirken), and received numerous Grammy nominations. A journalist from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch simply wrote: “The most beautiful music on the planet.” Hearing Bulgarian Voices in the awe-inspiring acoustics of Grundtvig’s Church will be a truly unique experience. With all 20 masterful vocalists on stage and under the direction of Katja Barulova, audiences can expect deeply rooted vocal artistry of the highest quality.
