Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen INT

Experimental new music in a small-scale format

Athelas and ALICE have decided to join forces and create a series of exciting concerts presenting experimental new music in a small-scale format—with live electronics.

For this concert, we are joined by the British composer Matthew Grouse, who, incidentally, lives in Copenhagen. He has written the first piece on the program: an interactive, humorous work for five musicians and an interviewer, who communicate live with the audience and performers. In addition, he is responsible for the concert’s live electronics.

Zaneta Rydzewska is a young Polish composer and clarinetist who has collaborated with several of the most renowned ensembles in Europe. She has written a duo for clarinet and flute, Le petit scandale, which Athelas musicians will perform.

Liza Lim is a world-famous Australian composer whose works have been played by many of the biggest and most important orchestras and ensembles worldwide. For this concert, we have chosen her very small—but rather wild—oboe solo, Gyfu.

Finally, we will present an utterly extreme piece of music by the British jazz trombonist and composer Alex Paxton. The piece is written for six musicians and electronics, and it sounds like a cross between an arcade game and a chamber ensemble on speed!

Program:
Matthew Grouse: A very exciting product launch – oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, electronics
Zaneta Rydzewska: Le petit scandale – flute, clarinet
Liza Lim: Gyfu – solo oboe
Alex Paxton: Split crystal yeast-rack dripping (in orange) – violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, synthesizer, electronics

The concert is supported by the Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansen Foundation, the Knud Højgaard Foundation, the Ministry of Culture, and the Danish Arts Foundation.
