Prepare for an incomparable Yes No Wave double bill with Raja Kirik and Gabber Modus Operandi, taking you on a wild journey from dark, electrified Javanese trance to potent, unusual fusions of Indonesian gamelan, grindcore, and driving rhythms of footwork at the pace of 200 bpm. DJ Nah Care will spin some sweet tunes between the concerts.

Gabber Modus Operandi
Gabber Modus Operandi is an accidental project founded by Kasimyn and Ican Harem. The duo promise potent, unusual fusions of “the sacred, the stupid, and the fun,” exhibiting a penchant for any and all things outrageous. After cutting their teeth at local parties and punk gigs in Denpasar, they banded together to experiment with and amalgamate the evil energies of gabber, driving rhythms of footwork, percussive patterns of funkot (an Indonesian dance music subgenre), and wildness of jathilan – the traditional Indonesian trance dance in which spirits possess a dancer’s body, challenging one to become more animal and more wild.

These ventures can be heard in their singular productions of what they quite accurately term “200 bpm orgasm music.” The live performance of Gabber Modus is accompanied by hectic tangles of Youtube clips, adding to the ADHD-like feel of the music, which make them an absolute must to experience live. As the Gabber Modus Operandi concert at ALICE got canceled in the corona Spring of 2020, we’re more than excited to have them back this April.

Raja Kirik
Raja Kirik – aka Yennu Ariendra (Yes No Wave) and J “Mo’ong” Santoso Pribadi – tries to capture the theatrical Javanese folk dance called “Jaranan Buto”, developed in 1963 on Banyuwangi the eastern part of Java island. This dance incorporates trance and magic trick lead by a shaman with a typical Java syncretic ritual related to the ancient Java animism, Hinduism and Islam. The war and the anger that takes part in Jaranan Buto has a strong connection with the history of Banyuwangi – a history of fear, hatred and the defeat of a peoples’ culture and dignity.

The urge to create a new work out of it is not as simple as conserving tradition or uplifting Indonesia’s exotic culture to the eye of the world. “Jaranan Buto” itself reflected the struggles faced by a lot of people in the world. With traditional instruments and live electronics, Raja Kirik creates a seductive and transcendent live experience that we already were lucky to experience, when they played at ALICE in 2019.
