ZULI EG + Deb Foam

Hard-hitting electronic dance music from Cairo's underground

An explosive evening at ALICE is ahead! ZULI plays forceful electronic music from Cairo’s underground scene with a high-energy danceable set. Copenhagen based electronic producer Deb Foam will open the night.

ZULI:
Ahmed El Ghazoly, aka ZULI, is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and sound artist, one of the prominent figures from Cairo’s underground scene. ZULI delivers danceable and hard-hitting electronic music, internationally known for releases on Lee Gamble’s label UIQ, including several EPs and his debut album “Terminal” (2018), combining experiments in rap/hip-hop with dance floor-ready music. Locally in Cairo, ZULI is best known for his work in the hip-hop scene, especially with rapper Abyusif, and in electronic music as part of the now-defunct collective Kairo Ist Koming (KIK) between 2012-2015. During that time, he co-founded Cairo’s alternative music venue and club, VENT, with Asem Tag, which existed from 2013-2015 before transforming into a club night and festival with the same name.

ZULI’s music has garnered widespread support, with fans including Aphex Twin, Autechre, Ben UFO, Bradley Zero, and Richie Hawtin. He has hosted his monthly show on NTS since 2016, featuring a dedicated hour to guest appearances from upcoming DJs and people he has met during his world tours. ZULI recently released the live album “Digla Dive – Live” on the legendary Nashazphone label and always has numerous new projects in the pipeline. ZULI performed on Roskilde’s platform stage last summer, and we are excited to present him at ALICE in February.

About ZULI:
“Probing that tension between dance floor connection and loner headtrip, ZULI seems to enjoy antagonizing club norms.” – Resident Advisor

“The producer whose music is too weird for Cairo, it turns out, is a few steps ahead of European clubbers, too.” – Pitchfork

Deb Foam
Copenhagen-based producer Deb Foam has dedicated herself to using music and sound as a way to express and cope with the often overwhelming emotions that can be difficult to identify and articulate. Her productions are characterized by their aggressive and heavy sound, which reflects themes of vengeance, hopelessness, and rage that run throughout her work. Despite the intensity of these themes, there is also a sense of playfulness and experimentation in Deb Foam’s music as she continues to search for new ways to channel and release her inner world through sound. Whether through her live performances or recorded work, Deb Foam remains committed to using music as a means of self-expression and healing. Deb opens the night.

The concert is part of Vinterjazz 2024 – a nationwide festival taking place from February 1 to 25. More info at www.jazz.dk.
