In 2022, Nyron independently released his debut album Fio de Lâmina – an instrumental work that, with few but precise elements, unfolded into poetic and deeply sensuous sonic textures. The album quickly drew international attention from figures like Mr. Scruff, Gilles Peterson, and John Gomez, cementing Higor as a remarkably sensitive bassist and composer. On his self-titled second album from 2025, released on the renowned London label Far Out Recordings, Higor takes a more expressive and melodic step. Here, he weaves his political consciousness into the music—a narrative of growing up as a young Black man in the economically challenged northeastern region of Brazil. It is music born of vulnerability, pride, and resilience, while also carrying the collective energy of an entire generation of artists from the area.
Nyron Higor’s sound is marked by a particular clarity: a playful organ voice here, a longing trombone motif there, or an almost bird-like flute placed with incredible precision above the spacious bass lines. At times, the music is also adorned with delicate vocals and electronic details. As a central figure in the new wave from Northeast Brazil – together with artists like Batata Boy, Phylipe Nunes Araújo, and Bruno Berle – Nyron Higor is helping shape the future of Brazilian music. Bruno Berle, one of Higor’s regular musical collaborators, performed an unforgettable concert at ALICE last year. If you enjoyed Berle’s feather-light arrangements and modern takes on Brazil’s rich musical traditions, the concert with Nyron Higor is definitely a must!
Phylipe Nunes Araújo
Phylipe Nunes Araújo opens the evening with quiet, poetic songwriting rooted in Brazil’s Northeast. Drawing inspiration from the landscapes of Pernambuco, Alagoas, and Bahia, he weaves folk traditions, regional rhythms, and delicate melodies into an intimate musical universe. As part of the blossoming Northeastern Brazilian scene, he collaborates closely with artists such as Bruno Berle, Batata Boy, and Nyron Higor. His debut album stands as a beautiful testament to this creative wave. Expect a deeply present performance where simplicity, reflection, and the spirit of Brazilian folk music go hand in hand.
