Juana Molina grew up surrounded by music as the daughter of tango singer Horacio Molina and actress Chunchuna Villafañe, and she began playing guitar at the age of five. After her family fled Argentina’s military dictatorship, she was exposed in Paris to a wide range of global musical expressions, which would later shape her curious and boundary-pushing approach to sound. Back in Argentina, she became a household name in the 1990s as a comedian and TV star before making the bold decision to step away from the spotlight and devote herself fully to music. Since her debut “Rara” (1996), Molina has continually refined her sound through pioneering use of loops, effects and electronics. Alongside this, she has developed a distinctly warped visual universe which, together with the music, forms an expression that is unmistakably her own.
Her albums on Domino Records, including the critically acclaimed “Tres Cosas”, earned Juana Molina international recognition, and her work has been admired by artists such as David Byrne and Will Oldham. Later releases like “Wed 21” and “Halo” cemented her status as an artist in constant motion. In 2025 she released “DOGA” – her first album of new material in eight years – a concentrated and deeply personal work that distils everything that defines Juana Molina’s music: unexpected melodies, organic sounds, dreamlike vocals, repetition as an aesthetic and a sense of quiet wonder. Live, through guitar and loop pedals, she transforms these elements into a captivating audiovisual experience where layers of sound emerge in real time. Look forward to a rare and enchanting concert experience when the Argentine star visits ALICE.
