Johan Lindström Septett SE

Boundary-pushing jazz from Swedish supergroup

Johan Lindström Septett inhabits a musical world entirely of their own, where jazz is merely a point of departure – not a limitation. This May, the Swedish supergroup takes over ALICE with boundless, cinematic and irresistibly groovy compositions. If you’re a fan of bands like Girls in Airports, this is a must-see when Johan Lindström Septett comes to town.

In recent years, Johan Lindström has established himself as one of Sweden’s most visionary musicians and producers. He has released music with Tonbruket, served as composer in residence with Norrbotten Big Band, and produced critically acclaimed albums for artists such as Lisa Nilsson, Isabella Lundgren, Rebecka Törnqvist and Weeping Willows. With Johan Lindström Septett, the prolific musician has brought together seven handpicked players from the Swedish jazz scene – a collective that, since their debut album Music for Empty Halls (2018), has received unanimous praise far beyond national and genre boundaries. The album was nominated for a Grammis, and the band won Group of the Year at the Swedish Jazz Celebration.

The follow-up, On the Asylum – featuring none other than Elvis Costello – earned them a Grammis for Jazz of the Year in 2022. Now the septet returns with their third album, Humankind, recorded at the legendary Atlantis Studio. The record unfolds as a continuous suite of twelve short, evocative pieces that together form a singular and uncompromising musical universe. Rooted in jazz – yet refusing to be confined by fixed forms or familiar grooves – the music moves freely, curiously, groovily and without boundaries, with elegant film noir-like twists. If you’re into bands like Girls in Airports, we highly recommend stopping by when Johan Lindström Septett visits ALICE.
