“Fulu Miziki hit us hard with an exhilarating barrage of rhythms.” – Politiken
Hailing from the Congolese capital of Kinshasa, Fulu Miziki take their name from a phrase that roughly translates as “music from trash”. Working under the strict principle of using only recycled materials, they create dark, danceable afro-rave music. Objects salvaged from rubbish dumps are also transformed into imaginative, outlandish costumes, making for a wild, otherworldly spectacle. The group even claims to be travellers from an imaginary future in which humanity has made peace with the planet’s ecosystems. Nothing ever stands still in Fulu Miziki’s activist universe, where instruments are constantly rebuilt and replaced. The collective have even completed an entire European tour using instruments they constructed along the way.
Fulu Miziki spread pan-African messages of liberation through art while raising awareness of the climate crisis in Congo and around the world. Music is at the heart of this immersive universe, and it is as compelling as it is convincing. Drawing on soukous, rooted in the Congolese rumba of the 1960s, they fuse infectious grooves with electronic rave energy in the spirit of the acclaimed electronic label Nyege Nyege, which has released several of Fulu Miziki’s acclaimed EPs and singles. So get ready! Danceable rhythms, punk aesthetics and explosive Afrofuturist energy come together when Fulu Miziki return to ALICE.
The concert is part of Vinterjazz 2027, a nationwide jazz festival taking place from 29 January to 28 February. Read more at www.jazz.dk.
