From human to machine and back to human again. The legendary, experimental electronic band Asa-Chang & Junray performs with a unique sound system known as Jun-Ray Tronics. This system contains numerous samples that are triggered when analog sound is fed into it. With this, the band crafts its distinctive sound, simultaneously drawing from Asian musical traditions and creating futuristic sonic landscapes. The word ‘junray’ also means pilgrimage, and Asa-Chang & Junray will take us on one—leading music to places it has never been before with their time signatures, polyrhythms and samples.
Asa-Chang & Junray was founded in the late ’90s by renowned tabla player Hirokazu Asakura, who collaborated with programmer and guitarist Hidehiko Urayama to develop the Jun-Ray Tronics sound system. In 2000, Hirokazu Asakura was joined by percussionist Hironori Yuzawa, known by his stage name U-zhaan. Asa-Chang & Junray’s 2001 album ‘Hana’ garnered international attention, with the title track sampling musician Sade’s “Pearls” and blending it with U-zhaan’s tabla performance, processed through the Jun-Ray Tronics system. This avant-garde electronic track is now over 20 years old but still sounds like something from the future. This night Hirokazu Asakura performs alongside saxophone flute player Yoshihiro Goseki and violinist Anzu Suhara. We can’t wait to experience Asa-Chang & Junray’s timeless yet futuristic music!
