Ange Halliwell FR

Ceremonial harp compositions between ambient folk and gothic romanticism

Ambient folk and horror aesthetics collide with hypnotic harp arpeggios and layers of hazy electronics in the music of Ange Halliwell. The acclaimed and singular French harpist moves effortlessly between fragility and intensity, inviting audiences into an experience suspended somewhere between concert, séance, and experimental performance art at ALICE this September.

Raised in the countryside of southwest France, Ange Halliwell began playing the harp at the age of twelve. Yet in Halliwell’s hands, the harp is far removed from a classical or traditional instrument. Its strings transform into percussive patterns and blurred drones, while the compositions unfold like dreams rather than linear narratives. Here, beauty and decay meet in a sensuous field of tension. The music radiates gothic romanticism, rural mysticism, and bodily transformation, evoking humid forests, abandoned chapels, and fading daylight. Fragile melodies gradually dissolve into ghostly repetitions, where whispered confessions and explosive screams unfold through the resonance of the harp.

In a remarkably short time, Ange Halliwell has emerged as a truly distinctive voice on the experimental scene, merging traditional instrumentation with a fascination for trance states, horror aesthetics, and emotional extremity. Collaborations with names like Sarahsson and Malibou testify to the project’s breadth and potential. We look forward to experiencing Halliwell’s strange, physical, and deeply immersive universe when they perform at ALICE this September.
