Sarah Louise (US) + Kloster

Neo-folk and psychedelic folk

Fanø Free Folk Festival and ALICE are wrapping up 2019 with a very special edition of our Free Folk Mondays. American guitarist Sarah Louise (Thrill Jockey) already created magic, when she performed at Fanø Free Folk Festival in 2018 with her duo House & Land as well as with her solo project. Since then she has released the new album “Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars”, a remarkable effort that sees her tapping into spiritual jazz, ambient and other experimental sonic layers, without abandoning her ability to evoke intimate spaces and an organic rootsy feeling.

The album builds a bridge between American folk music and contemporary experimental music. A sonic meditation circling around the beauty of nature and the magical borderland between nighttime and dawn. As Pitchfork wrote: “Even at her most technologically experimental, the natural world remains her primary inspiration, and the results are as deeply felt as they are deeply moving.”

We’re also thrilled to present a special performance by Danish pastoral neo-folk act Kloster. With Mikael Rahbæk Andreasen as leader, Kloster has performed in various constellations since the beginning in 2001. Kloster also performed at the very first Fanø Free Folk Festival in 2010 and has since performed at Roskilde Festival, just as the albums have been widely praised. Recently Mikael Rahbæk Andreasen has teamed up with multiinstrumentalist Mikkel Elzer to record an album with songs based on the unique poetry of Danish poet Simon Grotrian, who sadly passed away recently. With it’s visionary imagery and connections to a spiritual tradition, the poetry of Grotrian is a brilliant match for Kloster’s music. For the show at ALICE, Mikael Rahbæk Andreasen will perform solo with a set dedicated to the memory of Grotrian and the visionary beauty of his poetry.
