Yamm Ensemble SY/DK

Dazzlingly beautiful compositions between Syrian classical music and Syrian folk music traditions

Drawing from the Syrian National Ensemble, Yamm Ensemble presents dazzlingly beautiful compositions at the crossroads of Syrian classical music and folk music traditions, featuring oud, violin, and percussion. The ensemble has previously toured with Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, and The Syrian Expat Philharmonic Orchestra, and opened the Orange Scene at the Roskilde Festival in 2016. They are now performing at ALICE in April.

In Yamm Ensemble (formerly Syrian Expat Ensemble), four top professional Syrian musicians come together around a beautiful Middle Eastern repertoire of Syrian classical music, folk music, and contemporary compositions, where improvisation – the thousand-year-old tradition and ingredient in Middle Eastern music – unfolds delicately.

The four musicians met in Damascus where they were part of the Syrian National Ensemble until they had to flee the Syrian civil war in 2011. Since then, they have performed widely, including opening the orange stage at the Roskilde Festival in 2016 and touring Europe with Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians, and The Syrian Expat Philharmonic Orchestra.
