Maurice Louca (EG) + Nyåndeligt Miljø – Copenhagen Jazz Festival

Shaabi and electronic

ALICE Summer Series is of course taking part in Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and we’re proud to announce we’re bringing one of Egypt’s most visionary musicians to the country. Maurice Louca has previously performed at ALICE and Roskilde Festival with projects such as Lekhfa, Dwarfs of East Agouza, and Elephantine Band. Louca will play a solo show with his special mix of trippy electronica, cosmic jazz, and Arabic shaabi. Nyåndeligt Miljø will warm up the courtyard with transcendental tunes.

This concert is part of ALICE Summer Series’ Copenhagen Jazz Festival program and will take place in the yard between ALICE and UNION. Read more here.

Summer is upon us, and so is ALICE Summer Series – our open-air concerts with cold drinks and summer vibes galore, taking place in the courtyard between ALICE and UNION Fridays and Saturdays, from May and throughout August.

The Egyptian musician and producer Maurice Louca is one of the most profiled figures of the Arabic experimental art scene. Apart from having composed music for a number of theatre plays, movies and contemporary art projects, he is also one of the founders of the bands Bikya, Alif, and Karkhana, as well as Lekhfa and The Dwarfs of East Agouza, who both guested Roskilde Festival in 2018.

Louca is known for using samples and tape loops to create fusions between the Western and the Middleeastern, and the traditional and the modern. By breaking down musical barriers, employing everything from shaabi to psychedelic sounds, he creates mesmerizing tunes that cater to the curious ear. In 2019, Louca performed at ALICE with the cosmic jazz orchestra Elephantine. For this performance, as part of this year’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival, he will return to the solo format with material from an upcoming album. We can’t wait to see what’s in store from this visionary artist.

Nyåndeligt Miljø
Nyåndeligt Miljø is a think tank for transcendence, an open forum for facilitating free sounds. The Danish group denies typical band structures, instead exploring the potentials of noise and immersion, ecstasy and repetition, free from band leaders and rehearsed material. Nyåndeligt Miljø were supposed to play at ALICE as part of Sorte Firkant Festival 2021. The show was canceled due to COVID-19, so we’re pleased to be able to welcome them as part of Copenhagen Jazz Festival instead.

Practical info about ALICE Summer Series
Under the title ALICE Summer Series, we present open-air concerts Fridays and Saturdays from May and throughout August. We’ve moved the bar outside as well, and we make sure to follow all current COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions. Luckily, recent changes in the restrictions allow our guests to stand during the concerts – though we’ve of course made sure there are plenty of benches in the yard so you can rest your legs. Food from our friends at Send Flere Krydderier will be available, and the courtyard opens at 4pm, so stop by early for a beer and a chat in the sun.

Please note that a valid corona passport is required to enter the courtyard! We recommend you purchase a ticket in advance as this makes it easier for us to contact you regarding infection tracking. Please also note that we accept credit card and MobilePay at the bar, but not cash.
