This hybrid creature of a band has roots in London’s pirate radios as well as cassette tapes in Accra’s marketplaces. With deep Afro grooves, beats, and infectious energy, the group is a celebration of musical encounters with an invigorating sound that’s hard to stand still to. The new album, ‘Off The Grid’, has been released on the legendary label Real World Records.

The sensational Onipa unleashed their debut album, ‘We No Be Machine’ on Strut Records in March 2020. The record combines deep afro grooves, electronics and fierce energy in an effervescent celebration of cultural and musical encounters.

ONIPA means ‘human’ in Akan, the ancient language of the Ashanti people of Ghana. It’s a message of connection through collaboration: from Ghana to London, our ancestors to our children, Onipa brings energy, groove, electronics, dance and fire!

From Accra Market cassette tapes to London pirate radio stations, Malian blues to UK jazz – the twin creative forces behind Onipa — Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist) and Kweku Sackey (K.O.G. & the Zongo Brigade) – together with Finn Booth on drums and Dwayne Kilvington (a.k.a. Wonky Logic) on synths, have built a life-affirming and highly original world of sound. ‘Off The Grid’ is the band’s second full-length album, and first release on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records.
