Laura Ortman US + Ichi JP + Kpt. Ørentvist – CANCELLED

A fantastic, wide-ranging evening of bold experiments

Unfold all your senses for this fantastic, wide-ranging evening of bold experiments. ALICE presents the boundary-pushing American Apache violinist Laura Ortman, Japanese Ichi, who takes the one-man-band concept to new levels with homemade instruments, and the two Danish jazz veterans P.O. Jørgens and Jørgen Teller’s free-jazz-punk duo Kpt. Ørentvist.

Laura Ortman
American Laura Ortman is an exquisitely skilled and curious composer and violinist who, through a playful and inventive approach, explores the Apache violin to its noisiest extremes. Ortman amplifies and distorts the violin, runs it through effects pedals, and pairs it with melodic, almost pop-like vocals, often through a megaphone. It sounds simultaneously beautiful, frightening, and captivating, guaranteed to be unlike anything most have heard before. Laura Ortman first held the violin at the age of 7 and has refined and developed a completely unique sound over many years, one that is virtuosic, inspiring, and boundary-pushing, subtly returning to the roots of Native American folk. Ortman’s songs, compositions, and improvisations are intelligent, yearning, moving, and always permeated with distorted reverb. She has released music as a soloist, composed film scores, and collaborated with Tony Conrad, Jock Soto, Okkyung Lee, among others. Now she visits ALICE with her latest album “Smoke Rings Shimmers Endless Blur” (2023).

Ichi
Japanese multi-instrumentalist and artist Ichi takes the one-man-band concept to new levels with his performances, combining strange homemade instrument inventions like stilt-bass, kalilafon, balloon horn, and percussion shoes with steel drum, table tennis balls, typewriter, toys, and everyday objects – all in one short set. Ichi’s concerts have a simultaneously ritualistic and deeply experimental and boundary-pushing vibe, definitely something few have experienced the like of. He has toured solo in Japan and Europe and played at major festivals such as Glastonbury, End of the Road, and Latitude, has David Byrne and Deerhoof on his list of fans, and has played with iconic compatriots like Shugo Tokumaru and Tennis Coats. Ichi plays his first concert at ALICE this April evening.

Kpt. Ørentvist
Captain Ørentvist is a duo collaboration between the two veterans of Danish jazz and experimental music, P.O. Jørgens and Jørgen Teller, who describe themselves as a free-jazz-punk duo. They have had guest appearances from prominent musicians like Jimi Tenor, Kristian Tangvik, Erik Kimestad, Pierre Bastien, and Giancarlo Schiaffini, and will release new material in 2024.

Drummer and percussionist Peter Ole Jørgens, also known as P.O. Jørgens, played in the 1970s with, among others, John Tchicai and has been a central figure on the European improv scene ever since. Jørgens is particularly known for his creative and innovative use of a wide range of ethnic percussion instruments and techniques – an approach to his work that has enabled him to bridge the gap between free jazz and global roots.

Jørgen Teller has had a long career as an electric guitarist, vocalist, electronic musician, and performer. He has released many records, both solo and with Jørgen Teller & The Empty Stairs and Static Teller, and has collaborated with local and international musicians such as Rhys Chatham, Fast Forward, David (Pere Ubu) Thomas & foreigners, among others.
