The vibrant Indonesian experimental music scene has long offered a multitude of exciting projects, and one of the latest is KUNTARI. Tesla Manaf was originally a jazz musician when he chose to set aside his guitar in favor of a world filled with drum machines, noise boxes, and synthesizers. This gave rise to KUNTARI, which Manaf aptly describes as ‘primal core.’ Together with drummer Rio Abror, they create captivating, experimental soundscapes where mesmerizing Indonesian tribal rhythms, electronic elements, simulated animal mating calls on trumpet, and primitive voices come together in a dark and organic sonic wilderness.
After touring in Thailand, Taiwan, and Malaysia, KUNTARI has made an indelible impression on audiences with its intense dynamics. Especially after a 12-day tour in Japan with a performance at the Fuji & Sun Festival, the rest of the world has taken notice of the distinctive duo. KUNTARI’s 2021 album, “Last Boy Picked,” was awarded Album of the Year by the Jakarta Post and ranked high with Vice. Most recently, KUNTARI has released music on the iconic experimental label Yes No Wave Music.
KUNTARI has collaborated with a range of musicians across genres, including Arthur Hnatek, Morgue Vanguard, Jonas Engel, Dirk Wachtelaer, Luigi Monteanni, Yuji Ishihara, Yasushi Yoshida, and notably Rully Shabara, whom we have had the pleasure of presenting at ALICE before. In April, KUNTARI will grace the stage at ALICE in collaboration with Klang.
