“An elegant and powerful twist on traditional Mongolian music.” That’s how The Guardian described Enji’s album “Ulaan” (2023) when they highlighted it as one of the best releases of the year. And the praise is well-deserved. The Munich-based Mongolian singer has created a simultaneously remarkable and sonically pleasing expression as she merges ancient Mongolian root traditions with velvety jazz.
The world truly took notice of Enji’s special talent with “Ulaan” (2023), her third studio album. The title is a lovely nickname given by her family. Throughout the album, Enji explores connections between jazz, folk, and Mongolian traditions, while her clear, light vocals are lovingly accompanied by jazz guitar, double bass, brass, and a rhythm section. Enji sings in her native language, and the lyrics are inspired by personal experiences and moments of spontaneity, deeply tied to her homeland. Whether she brings ancient dreams to life through her lyrical universe, describes breathtaking vistas, or recounts stories of village visits, her narrative unfolds through rhythmic Mongolian melodies, emphasizing her unique abilities as a singer, bandleader, and storyteller. “Ulaan” has received widespread acclaim and also led to a prestigious Colors Sessions performance.
With guitarist and co-composer Paul Brändle and River Adomeit on bass, Enji embarks on her first tour through Europe, leaving behind memorable moments of tranquility and strength as she visits ALICE in a trio setup.
