And though she was born and raised in Nørrebro in Copenhagen as a child of globalization, she identifies just as much with a war heroine from Mars. Dejah Makar is an artist whose boundary-pushing sound, stylish, challenging visual expression and, not to mention, an exploratory lyrical universe are anything but a boring new acquaintance on the Danish music scene.

The 21-year-old songwriter debuted with the seductive anthem, ‘Bratty’, which, in all its cheekiness, sends a cadeau to the woman who takes power and destiny into her own hands.

‘Bratty’ was joined by three new songs on the EP, which is a sonic introduction to an artist who, through her upbringing, has cultivated her fascination for poetry on an equal level with belly dancing and all kinds of different cultures and visual expressions. She brings it all into her lyrics, which borrow and play with languages from around the world, and in her sound, which has a flair of modern rap and dancehall, edgy R&B, and styles such as Brazilian funk carioca and reggaeton. She herself calls her music “Global Baladi” – a future sound that is not limited by either language or cultural trends but instead is a multicultural and global sound and experience rooted in her Egyptian roots which is also her biggest inspiration.

Heavy on latin american influences Xenia Xamanek’s music and DJ-style often welcomes an unanticipated mixture of sounds, splicing disparate genres and textures. In this approach Xenia creates surreal soundscapes, hard-hitting beats and heart-piercing songs, which with its volatile aesthetics and shifting emotions evokes new utopias.
