»Colin Stetson is a musical genius«. That’s how simple it can be said, and how simply it is said in Exclaim’s review of the American saxophonist’s eminent solo album from 2017 ‘All This I Do For Glory’. But witnessing Stetson’s physical and almost earthquake-inducing approach to the saxophone is also a violent and sublime experience that effortlessly embraces such diverse genres as jazz, classical minimalism, ambient drone music, metal and much more. The list of fans and collaborators is correspondingly long. That everyone from Lou Reed and Tom Waits to Bon Iver, Hamid Drake, Sarah Neufeld and LCD Soundsystem have invited Stetson to collaborate says a lot about the respect he enjoys in many parts of the musical world.
Since his last solo album, Colin Stetson has been particularly active as a film composer, creating soundtracks for films such as Hereditary (2018) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022). Also, he is behind the unique musical reinterpretation of the Polish composer Henryk Górecki’s Symphony No. 3′ also known as ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’. With Greg Fox and a number of other like-minded people, he has also launched the post-metal project Ex Eye. But it is and will be something very special to experience Stetson solo on stage with his grandiose bass saxophone, from which he forces both melancholic and brutal sounds, and which he manages to make sound like everything from whale song to electronic drone music with a masterful use of circular breathing techniques and a unique ability to use the resonance of the room. When he visits ALICE at Stairway, it is with his new album ‘Chimaera 1’ (Room40, 2022), which explores the limits of drone music with bassy, zoned-out compositions.
