Most may remember Jamaican-American rapper and performance artist Zebra Katz, aka Ojay Morgan, for his explosive breakthrough hit “Ima Read” (2012), which went viral with its striking production and pulsating libido energy. The hit sent Zebra Katz on a constant five-year tour and garnered collaborations with labels like Diplo’s Jeffree’s. With “Ima Read,” Zebra Katz planted the seed for his long-awaited debut album “LESS IS MOOR,” which was released in 2020 as a result of eight years of artistic, identity-political, and activist efforts.
Referencing the medieval term “moor,” which at the time referred to black Muslims in North Africa and today is virtually synonymous with the N-word, Zebra Katz races through the 15 tracks of “LESS IS MOOR,” where a combination of hip-hop, experimental music, and club hits sets the fiery stage for his eccentric and performative expression. The album features collaborations with artists like Shygirl and S. Ruston, and names like Sega Bodega, Tony Quattro, and Torus on the list of collaborators, drawing inspiration from both activist and musical icons such as James Baldwin, Grace Jones, Nina Simone, and Little Richard. “LESS IS MOOR” received acclaim from critics, including Pitchfork, and earned Zebra Katz a Colors Show. On stage, Zebra Katz translates his music into explosive performances that draw the audience deep into Morgan’s captivating persona. We look forward to presenting him at ALICE in October.
