The Brazilian singer and multi-instrumentalist Bia Ferreira is one of her country’s leading musical voices. Her queer-feminist lyrics are a political appeal against racism, homophobia, and all forms of discrimination, and her courage and visionary take on music have made even the biggest skeptics listen. Ferreira describes her music as ‘MMP – Música da Mulher Preta’ (music of the Black woman) – which, despite all her anger, often features songs about the power of love, solidarity, and vulnerability. Here, influences from the African diaspora such as soul, R&B, and rap blend with samba and repente – the unique improvisation-driven singing tradition from northeastern Brazil. Above all, Bia Ferreira’s music is characterized by funky, catchy grooves and a glowing activist spirit behind sharp rap flows and sensual melodic phrases.
Bia Ferreira released her first album in 2018, but it was especially after the release of “Faminta” (2022) and a fantastic WOMEX showcase that same year that the world took notice of the Brazilian singer, leading to an extensive tour in the US and Europe. Alongside her musical work, Bia Ferreira’s activist voice has often contributed to the media and debates, and she continues to see it as her foremost task to be a spokesperson for oppressed minorities and to fight for a world with less discrimination and more solidarity. Additionally, Bia Ferreira is renowned for her live shows, so we look forward to presenting her at ALICE this fall.
