Alasdair Roberts & Völvur (UK/NO) at Xenon

Alternative folk

The singer and guitarist Alasdair Roberts is one of Scotland’s most outstanding folk musicians and has released over ten records in his own name, most of them on the esteemed Chicago-based label Drag City. His record, entitled “What News” was among other things praised by the legendary English singer Shirley Collins as “album of the decade”. In 2019 Alasdair Roberts teamed up with a brand new band of creative performers led by Norwegian experimental folk/improv musician Hans Kjorstad. Kjorstad had a vision to connect Roberts’ take on folk traditions with a group of gifted musicians from the young Norwegian music scene. From this vision the band Völvur arose.

Their very first concert together took place in Oslo. After this they performed in Copenhagen and on Fanø. It was clear from the Danish shows that something truly special happened in the meeting between Alasdair Roberts and Völvur. In January 2020, Völvur visited England and Scotland, to perform with Alasdair Roberts at Cecil Sharp House, London and at Platform, Glasgow, the latter as part of Celtic Connections festival. The group took new material into the studio – freshly written songs by Alasdair and several traditional Norwegian songs sung by Marthe Lea – and over a couple days at Sam and Rachel’s Studio, Hackney laid down the music which now flows forth as “The Old Fabled River”, the brand new album released by Drag City.

ALICE is thrilled to bring the excellent group back to Denmark for a show which will take place at Xenon.
