“Expect musical fireworks that not only move your hips and feet but also guide your mind into a blissful mood,” Romperayo accurately describes themselves. Alongside names like Meridian Brothers, Frente Cumbiero, and Los Pirañas, Colombia has established itself as a musically fascinating melting pot in recent years, with artists who blend the country’s cultural roots and folk music with spaced-out electronic sounds, psychedelia, and jazzy detours. Romperayo beautifully joins the ranks of names in this vibrant scene. The band’s drummer is Pedro Ojeda, known from Los Pirañas, who has delivered phenomenal concerts at ALICE several times.
They call themselves “tropical futurists,” in the band’s futuristic vision, it’s all about dancing. With a lively mix of tropical rhythms from descarga music, psychedelic cumbia, and modern electronics, Romperayo creates an extravagant cocktail that makes it impossible to stand still. Armed with drums, bass, keyboards, and an arsenal of quirky and charming samples, they are known for sending the audience into a state of joyful trance.
The band has released two albums that have garnered acclaim, both domestically and internationally, as well as their latest single, “El Negro Adàn.” In 2017, they were invited to perform at HKW in Berlin for an evening with the legendary Arto Lindsay and have graced festivals such as Le Guess Who and Roskilde Festival over the years. Now, they are returning to ALICE for the second time, and it’s something to look forward to!
