NaraBara sounds like nothing else. The musical collective was born out of Beijing’s neon-lit nightlife and small livehouses in the 2010s. Consisting of four top musicians led by the enigmatic producer and vocalist Yider, NaraBara combines the complex harmonies and intricate rhythms of jazz with the mystical storytelling and atmospheric qualities of Mongolian folk music. The group offers a pleasant and almost ambient soundscape, with warm and calm two-part vocal harmonies wrapped in jazzy compositions with references to R’n’B and electronica.
NaraBara’s debut album, “Hamt Zamin Hümüs,” was released in 2023 and marks Mongolian-born Yider’s return to his musical and cultural roots. The album showcases the band’s exceptional ability to bridge traditional instruments and modern aesthetics, seamlessly combining the classic jazz instrumentation of piano, bass, and drums with the Moroccan gimbri, West African ngoni, and the Mongolian string instrument morin khuur. The final result is a Mongolian-sung, jazz-fused synergy that embodies the album’s name “Companions” – a boundary-breaking, creative collaboration among friends and musicians who constantly find inspiration in each other. NaraBara released the EP “Dab Hi” this year and is set to take over ALICE as they embark on a European tour this autumn.
