Soothing, ambient jazz collages under the majestic vaults of Hellig Kors Church

The acclaimed LA-based composer, producer, musician, and DJ Laurel Halo has been recognized since 2012 as a fearless explorer of sound, with a repertoire ranging from pop to ambient and leftfield club music. Last year, she surprised with the album “Atlas” (Awe, 2023) – a suite of beautiful orchestral ambient jazz collages, composed on piano, featuring guest appearances from Coby Sey and Bendik Giske. This October, we are excited to present Laurel Halo performing “Atlas” under the majestic vaults of Holy Cross Church, accompanied by cello.

The acclaimed Los Angeles-based composer, producer, musician, and DJ Laurel Halo has been recognized since 2012 as a fearless explorer of sound, with a repertoire spanning genres such as pop, ambient, leftfield club music, experimental electronica, and film music. Halo’s signature sound and unique artistic vision tie it all together as she blends a vast array of inspirations, with gender fluidity always central to her works. With albums like “Quarantine” (2012, Hyperdub), “In Situ” (2015, Honest Jon’s), “Raw Silk Uncut Wood” (2018, Latency), and “Possessed: OST” (2020, Vinyl Factory), Laurel Halo has performed all over the world, including at the Sydney Opera House, London’s Southbank, Kölner Philharmonie, and Montreux Jazz Festival. She has collaborated with artists and designers such as Moritz von Oswald, Metahaven, Kevin Beasley, Julia Holter, Hanne Lippard, Eckhaus Latta, John Cale, and the London Contemporary Orchestra.

Laurel Halo released her latest album “Atlas” on her newly founded label Awe in September 2023. Unlike her previous releases and works, the album is a suite of orchestral ambient jazz collages composed on piano. In a floating, transparent, yet tactile and dramatic universe, the record is a beautiful weaving of electronic elements with performances from Coby Sey, cellist Lucy Railton, violinist James Underwood, and experimental saxophonist Bendik Giske. Halo began the process for “Atlas” back in 2020, when the pandemic provided an opportunity to revive her childhood love for the piano. This October, look forward to hearing Laurel Halo perform her new album live, as she fills Hellig Kors Church with soothing tones, accompanied by cello.
