The Ukrainian Black Sea coastal city of Odesa is known for its relaxed lifestyle, a very special sense of humor, and not least its rich folk music tradition. Kommuna Lux combines folk music, Balkan rhythms, and street folklore from Odesa into lively and festive music, which the band themselves call “Odesa gangsta folk.” Accompanied by six charming musicians, lead singer Bagrat Tsurkan delivers the joyful songs and melodies from Odesa and all of Eastern Europe in spiced-up arrangements. Kommuna Lux is known for their entertaining and flash mob-like live shows, which are directly inspired by how street musicians many years ago performed spectacularly at Odesa’s famous fish market Privoz and in rusty rocking boats off the coast.
The nostalgic atmosphere and warm bohemian vibe accompany Kommuna Lux wherever they go, and the audience is captivated from the first note. In addition to the band’s presence at major Ukrainian festivals such as Koktebel Jazz Festival, Kyiv Klezmer Fest, Atlas Weekend, or Woodstock Ukraine, the group has performed at Summer Festival of Cultures in Stuttgart, and at the Master Theater in New York. In 2018, Kommuna Lux won the prestigious German folk music award “Eisernen Eversteiner.” Don’t miss out on a festive evening when Kommuna Lux fills ALICE with shaking rhythms, refreshing anarchy, and plenty of zest for life.
