Buck Curran
For almost 20 years, American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Buck Curran has made a decisive mark on modern psych folk with a style that demonstrates both historical awareness and innovation. In 2005 he formed the seminal neo-folk duo Arborea, who performed at Fanø Free Folk Festival in 2014. 10 years on, Fanø Free Folk Festival has the pleasure of bringing Curran to Denmark again, this time with his solo project. As a soloist, Curran has continued to develop his personal style with clear nods towards imaginative guitarists such as Bert Jansch, John Fahey and Robbie Basho, but also with an interest in dreamy and atmospheric soundscapes, which is particularly evident on his latest album, “The Long Distance” (2023). Here, Curran delves into a world of analog synthesizers, cinematic atmospheres and cosmic music inspired by 70s acts such as Popol Vuh, while his roots in psychedelic neo-folk shine through.
Adele H
Italian musician Adele H started out by exploring an experimental folk sound driven by vocals, loops and percussion. On her latest album, the critically acclaimed ‘Impermanence’ (2023), she moves into a more classic songwriting universe, where soulful vocals are accompanied by mesmerizing and impressionistic piano tones. Adele H herself cites influences such as Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone and Cat Power, but out of these inspirations grows her own distinct sound that is at once fragile and rich in spiritual power, with elements of pop, soul and folk. Folk Radio named the album one of the best of the year, saying that it “transcends its varied influences and becomes a wonderful and, at times, cathartic work of art, brimming with confidence and bursting with important questions about womanhood, metaphysics and music.” We look forward to experiencing Adele H’s amazing songs at ALICE.
Tidebound
The evening will be opened by Tidebound, who since 2011 have enriched Danish music with his own gloomy take on folk music, weaving classical songwriting into both gothic shadows and psychedelic haze. Behind Tidebound is songwriter Dave Müller, who has a background in heavier and noisier bands such as Black Wreath, Chasing Eudaimonia and The Eudaimonia Collective. Live and on record, Tidebound is often augmented by regular collaborator Laura Noszczyk, whose beauty-seeking backing vocals have become an integral part of Tidebound’s sound. We had the pleasure of experiencing Tidebound at Fanø Free Folk Festival in 2016, and look forward to revisit the dark and atmospheric world at ALICE in April.
