Like a refreshing breeze, Buzz Ayaz’s vibrant Eastern Mediterranean psychedelia and dark funk flow from the stage to the audience, who have quickly fallen for the Cypriot quartet. Buzz Ayaz is a brand-new project with Antonis Antoniou at the helm. Antoniou, known for award-winning bands such as Monsieur Doumani and Trio Tekke, has met the world’s expectations for Buzz Ayaz’s synergy, sound, and quality immediately. The band’s four musicians—all activists in their own right—hail from the divided capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, and their sound reflects a mosaic of cultures, traditions, and the island’s turbulent political reality.
Buzz Ayaz primarily draws clear inspiration from 70s psychedelia, generously spiced with dynamic offbeat drum grooves, dirty bass clarinet riffs, organ, synths, and Anatolian melodic phrases. The result is a simultaneously menacing and sparkling trance-like dream state of a sound that you can’t help but surrender to and trip out on. Buzz Ayaz will release their debut album in the fall of 2024 on the iconic Glitterbeat Records label, and the band’s first single “Zali” already heralds an excellent concert experience when they hit ALICE in September.
