Astillero is notorious as the most exciting name on Buenos Aires’ new tango scene. The sextet grew out of the Argentine crisis, and their dizzying, raw, and sophisticated tango reflects the passion, rebellion, and madness of seething Buenos Aires. Listening to Astillero is like being swept away on a thrilling roller coaster ride of pulsating beats, pianissimos, and galloping modulations. The six musicians resemble a classic tango ensemble with two bandoneons, violin, piano, cello, and double bass, but the sound is new, refreshing, visionary, and complex.
With a handful of critically acclaimed albums behind them, including the brand new “Noche Random” (2024), twenty European tours in recent years, and a highly talked-about showcase at WOMEX, Astillero is indeed building an international fan base. The BBC compares the sextet to the revolutionary tango composer and writes, “The continuation of Piazzolla, absolutely virtuous, crazy and fantastic.” We can’t wait for them to come and fill the hall on Nørre Allé with fantastic tunes this November.
