Since 2011, Príncipe Discos has been the home of the iconic batida sound — an experimental electronic dance music genre that emerged from the suburbs, ghettos, and housing projects of Lisbon. Batida DJs mix playful samples, techno, and house with genres such as kuduro and kizomba, rooted in the former Portuguese colonies of Africa. For CLUB PRÍNCIPE, we’re proud to host not just one but two Copenhagen premieres as Danifox, DJ Lycox, and DJ Yaqub set ALICE’s dance floor ablaze.
Danifox
The playful DJ Danifox, born in Lisbon to Angolan parents, began making his first beats as a means of sheltering from family-related difficulties surrounding him. His 2023 album ‘Ansiedade’ received critical acclaim, highlighted as one of the year’s best releases. Among them were Resident Advisor, stating that: “Danifox’s lilting melodies wrap batida’s bounce into a dulcet, romantic daze.”
DJ Lycox
Born in Portugal to Angolan heritage, DJ Lycox offers a fresh and more vulnerable take on the danceable batida genre. His album Guetto Star, released in October last year, was recognized by Pitchfork as one of the year’s best electronic albums.
DJ Yaqub
Somali-born, Copenhagen-based DJ Yaqub delivers high-energy sets that blend groovy house, gqom, and tech-house. They have performed at venues such as Den Anden Side, Bøssehuset, and on Drift Radio.
The concert is presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Portugal & Camões – Institute for Cooperation and Language, Portugal
